HUBBALLI: A 38-year-old woman died after a kite string (manja) slit her throat while she was riding a two-wheeler on Karwar Road in Hubballi on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased, Vidya Manjunatha, was passing near Shivashankar Colony when the hanging string caught her neck and cut her throat, leading to her death.

City Police Commissioner Bhushan Gulabrao Borase expressed regret over the incident and warned that the police would take strict action against those using and selling manja.

“We have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder at Old Hubballi police station. We will investigate the incident and identify those responsible,” he told reporters.
The commissioner said the police had already warned people against using the banned kit string and would intensify checks following the death.

“I want to send a clear message to the people of Hubballi-Dharwad that criminal cases will be registered against anyone found using it. We will deploy our crime staff to check for its use,” he said.

Borase added that action would also be taken against those selling the banned kite string.
