Doctors, like everyone else, must prioritise their health to ensure they are at their best, both physically and mentally, in order to provide the highest quality care for their patients, says Dr Pragnya Chigurupati, breast oncologist and oncoplastic surgeon. She believes, “Balancing the demands of a hectic work schedule with self-care requires discipline, commitment, and a mindful approach to well-being. It’s not always easy, but it’s crucial to maintain this balance, as it directly impacts how effectively we can care for others.”
For her, fitness and exercise have always been a mantra to feel good from the inside, rather than focusing solely on physical appearance. “Fitness has been an integral part of my routine for the past 20 years, ever since my parents began running marathons. Their example inspired me to adopt a mix of strength training and cardio exercises, which has become essential to my daily life and overall well-being,” says the mother of two.
Recently, she has incorporated Pilates into her routine, and it has significantly improved her results. “The focus on abdominal toning post delivering both of my kids has had a profound impact, and I truly enjoy the way it strengthens both my core and my mental focus. It’s refreshing to experience Pilates to challenge me in different ways.”
As for her diet, she doesn’t follow a strict or restrictive plan but makes mindful choices. “I consciously limit my sugar intake and have drastically reduced my consumption of diet sodas and other sugary drinks. My meals typically include a healthy balance of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. I also allow myself a cheat day every week to indulge without guilt, as I believe everything in moderation is key.”
It’s all about eating well, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly, says the doctor.
These habits not only support physical health but also contribute significantly to mental well-being.
“My daily routine starts early, at around 5:30 am. I work out until about 7 am. Then, I prepare breakfast for my kids and take my eldest son, Jeh, to school. Afterward, I get ready for work and am usually back home by 4 pm from my practice.”
The evenings are reserved for spending quality time with her children, winding down, and putting them to bed. “This routine, while demanding, helps me stay grounded and maintain a sense of balance amidst the chaos of work and family life, ensuring I am present both at work and at home,” she signs off.
