Shoppers ‘Get Carried Away’ With Hands-Free Shopping
Several premier malls and high-end food halls in India now offer services of shopping chauffeurs, bag carriers and bargain hunters
It is always good to have a ‘helping hand’ when you go shopping. Whether you are power shopping at a mall in Delhi or buying weekly farm-to-table greens in a food hall in Mumbai and Goa, the services of shopping assistants, bag carriers, shopping chauffeurs and bargain hunters have revolutionised the hands-free shopping experience. Although it comes at a price (Rs 150/hour onwards), the convenience outweighs everything.
Help At Hand
Welcome to the phenomenon of helping hands —where you can hire someone to pick up groceries, carry your shopping bags, walk your pets, scout for bargain deals, stand in long queues, fetch documents, or simply hold your place in a system that refuses to slow down. “The rise of personal helpers and errand-running services clearly reflects changing family structures and urban lifestyles,” says Parveen Gulati, a Delhi based businessman. He notes that earlier, in joint families, responsibilities such as shopping, caring for elders, and handling daily errands were typically shared among family members.
However, with the increasing prevalence of nuclear families and more people living away from home for work or education, individuals today often find themselves managing everything on their own.
Parveen quips, “Busy schedules, traffic congestion, and the lack of nearby support systems have further contributed to the growing demand for such services in urban areas.”
Employment Opportunities
Not just that, these services are also quietly easing pressure on urban unemployment. By turning everyday errands into paid work, they create flexible earning opportunities for people who may not have access to formal jobs.
From a business perspective, the personal shopping assistant or helper service is built on a simple truth—urban life is short on time. “Many people, especially senior citizens are willing to pay a small price for someone to carry their shopping bags, stand in queues, or run errands,” says Gauresh Kini, a resident of Porvorim, who appreciates these services offered at most of the big supermarkets in north Goa.
Much like food delivery and ride-hailing apps reshaped convenience, these services are now stepping in to take the load off everyday city living.
Time Saviours
Another resident from Delhi-NCR, Brahm Prakash, feels that these services are not only helpful for busy professionals but can support a much wider group of people. Brahm says, “In cities like Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, people spend hours in traffic and often have very hectic schedules.” For working professionals, these services help save time and reduce stress. It also benefits senior citizens who may struggle with errands, students living away from home, pregnant women, and people recovering from illness. “In a fast-paced city like Mumbai, small support with daily tasks makes a huge difference,” says Jugnu Ojha (59), who regularly avails the ‘bag carrier’ service at the weekend Farmers’ Market in Bandra, Mumbai.
Madhu Naik, a student at Delhi University, says during busy academic schedules, students often struggle to manage coursework, internships, projects and personal responsibilities. Madhu adds, “For me, outsourcing would not mean avoiding work but seeking support when the workload becomes overwhelming.”
Convenience Economy
This shift also raises concerns. As such services expand, they risk pushing individuals further into a convenience-driven economy, where even the smallest everyday tasks are routinely outsourced. At its extreme, this becomes a quiet but striking display of power and wealth, where even the smallest fragments of daily life can be delegated, and convenience itself turns into a marker of status.
A deeper look at shopping assistant services not just reveals convenience, but how urban life is quietly rewriting the rules of shopping. The math is simple. Those who can afford to ask someone to carry their burden, and those who are willing to carry it for a small price!
