Perfect Pose And Posture
As people celebrate International Yoga Day (June 21), experts put the spotlight on the importance of doing yoga asanas correctly to find balance amid life’s chaos
It’s time to take a deep breath, gradually stretch and strike the perfect yoga asana pose for the holistic healing of your body, mind and soul. As June 21 is celebrated as International Yoga Day, the spotlight is once more shining deservedly on the form of exercise that is ubiquitous as it is popular. Yoga develops strength, mobility, balance, body awareness, emotional resilience, and mental clarity.
Holistic Wellness
When Hyderabad-based homemaker Lata Reddy was going through depression because of her early onset of menopause, she was constantly crying and had suicidal tendencies. It was her friend who introduced her to yoga, and she has, to use a cliché, never looked back. “It has been almost 20 years since I have been practising yoga, and it really helped me navigate my depression. It needs a lot of dedication under the guidance of a professional tutor, and with healthy eating and a disciplined life, it automatically advocates for you,” she says.
As Hyderabad solidifies its footprint as a leading global tech and corporate hub, there is a massive shift in how the city approaches fitness. Long desk hours and high-stress environments are driving Hyderabadis away from purely exhausting, high-intensity workouts toward holistic mindfulness. “In fact, at Decathlon India, we’ve observed a significant surge in local demand for sustainable yoga gear, like jute and natural rubber mats, signalling that Hyderabadis are seeking a deeper, more intentional connection to their health,” says Neha Sharma, City Director / City Leader for Decathlon Sports India.
Stretch & Shine
Yoga combines movement, breath, and awareness. Depending on the style, it can elevate the heart rate and provide a mild to moderate aerobic effect while simultaneously improving mobility and flexibility. Aamani Reddy, Founder of PureFuel Health & Well-being in Hyderabad, says, “The stretching that occurs in yoga is not simply about becoming more flexible. Through different asanas, muscles are lengthened while being actively engaged, joints are moved through their available range of motion, and circulation is improved. This combination helps maintain healthy movement patterns, reduce stiffness, and improve overall physical function. Unlike aggressive forms of stretching, yoga encourages mindful movement, allowing practitioners to explore their body's capabilities safely and progressively.”
Age No Bar
What makes yoga unique is its sustainability. It can be practised across different ages and stages of life—from children and athletes to older adults and even during pregnancy, with appropriate guidance. Beyond improving physical health, yoga teaches us how to manage stress, regulate our nervous system and cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves. “The science-backed benefits of incorporating yoga into ageing gracefully cover several key areas. Although I realised a little late in life, I make it a point to go to bed early. Eat healthy. Wake up at 2 am and practise till 6:30 am. I can flex my body with difficult postures at any time of the day. The body gets unbelievably flexible. There are more than one lakh postures. I get innovative and love getting into advanced postures,” adds Lata.
Flex Cues
Flexibility develops when muscles, connective tissues and joints are regularly moved through their full range of motion. Yoga provides this opportunity through a variety of postures that target different areas of the body, including the hips, spine, shoulders, and hamstrings. “True flexibility is not simply the ability to stretch further. Yoga also develops strength and control within those ranges of motion. This is important because flexibility without stability can increase the risk of injury. Through consistent practice, yoga helps create a body that is both mobile and strong, allowing movement to feel more effortless and efficient,” says Aamani.
Muscle Power
Many people associate yoga primarily with stretching, but yoga can be a powerful strength-building practice as well. Postures such as plank, Chaturanga, warrior poses and balancing asanas require muscles to contract and support body weight, helping build strength and endurance. Yoga also improves muscular coordination and body awareness. Rather than isolating individual muscles, yoga teaches multiple muscle groups to work together efficiently. This can improve posture, movement quality and overall functional strength that carries over into daily life. “The popular notion is that strength training demands the use of heavy weights. However, yoga is an effective means of strengthening muscles with the help of one’s own bodyweight. Yoga poses include exercises where muscle strength and control play a significant role. Asanas like Virabha-drasana are examples where strength and balance need to be maintained for some time through various movements. Yoga helps in gaining strength in the core and back muscles while promoting proper posture and improving body control,” says Neha.
Stress Buster
One of the major advantages of yoga practice is that it reduces stress and improves sleep quality. The use of deep breathing techniques not only helps reduce the feeling of stress but can also assist in concentration and gaining mental clarity. In addition to being a physical practice, yoga promotes mindfulness, allowing you to remain aware throughout, which keeps you fully present in the moment. In a world that constantly demands our attention outward, yoga invites us inward. It helps us build resilience, cultivate self-compassion, and develop a greater sense of balance, both physically and emotionally. That is why, for many people, yoga becomes not just a practice but a way of life.
