Ancient Blueprint for a Greener Tomorrow

Experts feel the answer to India’s water crisis, pollution, climate change woes lie hidden in ancient wisdom — low-irrigation farming, indigenous water conservation methods and eco-friendly homes

From the sinking water table of Gurgaon to the crumbling canal towns of West UP, from Rajasthan's parched tankas to Ladakh’s melting glacier-channels, and the periodic water shortages in Andhra Pradesh, India’s water crisis wears a different face in every state. But the fix, environmentalists say, might be the same everywhere — dig up what we buried. Long before borewells and concrete, Indian communities built their own systems to catch, store and share water, and to farm without draining either the soil or the sky.

The historic horseshoe-shaped stepwells in Andhra’s Prakasam district are indigenous marvels. The ancient tank irrigation systems to cultivate paddy is still widely used in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Decades of unchecked construction have pushed many of those systems to the edge. Now, as cities run dry and farmlands vanish under new master plans, a growing number of green crusaders are arguing that reviving this old playbook, alongside real enforcement and modern tools, is the only way forward.

Vanishing Lakes


Naturalist Jyoti Raghvan has spent years tracking what’s left of Gurgaon’s water bodies. “Out of 644 water bodies, Gurgaon has lost 153 beyond revival. They have been lost to concretization. The remaining 450-plus are battling severe pollution or encroachments,” she says.

It isn't just the lakes. Raghvan points to Basai wetland and Gataji as two of the city's most critical, and most abused, recharge zones. “They are extremely critical and crucial water catchment and recharge areas that have been heavily encroached upon,” she says. Removing the encroachments and restoring both sites would meaningfully ease Gurgaon’s twin crises: summer water shortages and monsoon flooding.

For Raghvan, reviving johads, bandhs, baolis and lakes can undo some of the damage, but not all of it. Restoration simply can’t keep pace with the growing population and building constructions. Her fix: “Make rooftop rainwater harvesting and underground storage tanks non-negotiable for every building.” A Commanding Canal

Head northeast to the Upper Ganga Canal. Environmentalist and activist Vikrant Tongad calls it one of the largest canal networks ever built. Dug by Indian labour under British orders and once so tightly protected that walking along its banks was forbidden. Today, its command area stretches from Greater Noida to Jewar airport, quietly shrinking under new master-plan sectors. “In several districts, roads are being built right through the canal's command area, that's what’s affecting it most,” Tongad explains. The consequence is straightforward. “When agriculture used to happen, groundwater used to be recharged. Now there is pollution in the canals, and the water load has reduced.” The rampant use of borewells has broken centuries-old discipline of water-sharing.

Unbeatable Ancient Wisdom


Zoom out from the NCR, and the same story of forgotten genius repeats itself in every terrain. Tongad points to Rajasthan as the country's best-known case study, a state that, despite scant rainfall, has historically squeezed every possible drop out of its traditional tanka and tanker storage systems. He also flags Kerala's hillside "tunnel method," where communities cut small channels into hill slopes to feed ponds and irrigate fields below, and Ladakh's centuries-old zing system, which channels meltwater from Himalayan glaciers into village fields. But even these time-tested systems are buckling under climate change.

Rajasthan’s traditional storage networks, built for scarcity, are struggling with unseasonal flooding. Kerala’s hillside channels (aka surangams) are silting up as heavier, more erratic rainfall erodes hillside soil. And Ladakh’s zing channels face an existential threat as the glaciers feeding them retreat faster every year. In the North-East, traditional, low-chemical farming has survived largely intact, and is now seeing rising demand for its produce.

Local Engineering Marvels

The same pattern of community-built engineering shows up almost everywhere you look on the map. Bihar's ahar-pyne network channels flood water from rivers into storage ponds and then out to the fields through a web of small canals. Tamil Nadu’s eri system links chains of village tanks that double up as flood control and groundwater recharge. Himachal Pradesh's kuhls carry glacial stream water down to terraced fields purely by gravity, run for generations on community rosters. Each was built for its own terrain, but they all share the same logic: Catch the water close to where it falls, and let the community, not concrete, manage it.

Homes Built to Breathe

It isn’t only water and farmland that India's ancestors engineered better. Housing is in its own revival. With buildings now accounting for roughly 40% of India's energy use, architects are turning back to techniques that kept homes cool for centuries without a single watt of electricity: thick mud or lime walls that soak up daytime heat and release it slowly after dark, perforated stone “jaali” screens that let breeze in while blocking direct sun, and courtyards that pull hot air up and out through a natural chimney effect.

In Rajasthan's desert villages, tribes still build with soil, cow dung and husk, materials so low-maintenance and so easily replaced that when a mud house is finally dismantled, it simply returns to the earth. The idea has jumped from rural huts to high-rises in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

A Blueprint That Works

Pointing to Gurgaon’s Wazirabad Lake as proof that restoration pays off, Raghvan says, “The successful revival has not only solved the monsoon flooding of streets and water shortage during summers in surrounding sectors, but the beautification has also led to the area becoming safer and more inviting for potential buyers,” with biodiversity flourishing alongside it.

Tongad cites the clean-up effect of a canal running through a biodiversity park in Greater Noida’s Dadri belt. “Earlier, people used to cover their faces and walk past because of the smell. Now they stop, they sit, they bring their kids,” he says.

Old Wisdom, New Rules

Environmentalists assert that indigenous, low-irrigation farming, traditional water systems coupled with modern tools: desalination, water recycling, and smart monitoring will help. Tongad says, “Keeping conventional water-harvesting systems alive doesn’t need heavy funding, just protecting the forests and grasslands that feed them, and restoring what's already been destroyed.”

The blueprints for surviving India’s water crisis already exist, buried under a few decades of concrete and neglect. The only open question is whether the country is willing to dig them back up before the water runs out for good.
