Woman Offers Newborn For One Lakh, Found To Be Biological Mother
LB Nagar police booked a woman for allegedly offering her newborn for money, later finding she was the infant’s biological mother.
LB Nagar police registered a case after a 34-year-old woman attempted to offer her newborn baby for adoption in exchange for money. Subsequent enquiries revealed that she was the biological mother of the infant.
According to police, a 62-year-old resident of NTR Nagar lodged a complaint stating that his younger daughter, who had been facing infertility, was looking to legally adopt a newborn. He informed neighbours and customers to alert him if they came across information about a child available for legal adoption.
An unknown woman approached him carrying a newborn, said to be around eight days old, and offered to give the child for adoption in exchange for `1 lakh. Finding her suspicious, the man refused to accept the baby or pay any money. Police said the woman returned with the infant again and reduced her demand to `30,000, claiming that she urgently required money for her elder daughter's marriage.
Suspecting that the newborn may have been illegally procured and was being offered for sale, the complainant refused the proposal and alerted the police. The woman and the infant were subsequently handed over to LB Nagar police.
A case was registered under Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, which deals with the sale and procurement of children. During the inquiry, police found that the woman, identified as Lalmon Khatoon, 34, is a native of Bihar and also the biological mother of the newborn. The matter was reported to the child welfare committee (CWC), which issued her a notice. Police said the woman is currently under the surveillance of the CWC as further action in the case continues.
