Telangana Hopes for Breakthrough on 80 TMC Tummidihatti Water at Delhi Talks
The meeting is expected to examine Telangana’s proposal to construct the barrage at Tummidihatti with a full reservoir level of 150 metres.
Hyderabad:The state government is expecting that the talks with Maharashtra convened in New Delhi on September 1 by the Union jal shakti ministry on the Tummidihatti project could pave way for the eventual diversion of 80 tmc ft of water from Pranahita river which can be taken by gravity to the Sundilla barrage.
The meeting is expected to examine Telangana’s proposal to construct the barrage at Tummidihatti with a full reservoir level of 150 metres. Telangana is expected to seek Maharashtra’s consent for a 152-metre level barrage, in place of the 148-metre level accepted by the then BRS government in 2016.
According to the state government, a 152-metre barrage would be more advantageous for Telangana, and technical studies by the Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, estimated submergence in Maharashtra at about 1,150 acres at 148 metres, and just over 2,500 acres at 152 metres.
A taller barrage level would mean that water can be conveyed to Sundilla barrage by means of gravity, reducing dependence on energy intensive lift irrigation, according to irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, who on Saturday held a preparatory meeting with irrigation secretary E. Sridhar, engineer-in-chief (general) O.V. Ramesh Babu and other senior officials ahead of the meeting in New Delhi.
