Retired Sanskrit professors and experts across India will have their homes turned into temporary classrooms as Osmania university’s educational multimedia research centre (EMRC) prepares a new digital Sanskrit course.

According to Osmania University (OU), the centre has secured a `70-lakh project from IIT Bombay under the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) division of the ministry of education to create 110 hours of Sanskrit teaching content, which will be developed into 440 digital lessons using artificial intelligence and other technologies.

EMRC teams will travel to different regions to record retired Sanskrit professors and experts at their homes. Their lectures and expertise will subsequently be converted into structured online lessons, which will be offered as minor courses through the IKS Division, an OU official told Deccan Chronicle.

The project could give students access to senior Sanskrit scholars and their specialised knowledge beyond the institutions where they taught.

IIT Bombay professor Pawan Kumar Hari said EMRC was selected after its infrastructure, technical expertise and capabilities were assessed against its proposal. He also indicated that more joint projects with the centre could follow.

OU vice-chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram said the project would help pass Indian knowledge traditions to future generations while strengthening collaborations with institutions across the country. He said EMRC had recently gained national recognition through collaborations and research projects and was moving towards financial self-reliance.
