Hyderabad: A fresh controversy has arisen at Gandhi Hospital after the family of an elderly stroke patient alleged that she was abruptly discharged following complaints filed against doctors over an alleged assault involving a patient attendant and a postgraduate doctor.

After the family approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC), the discharge was withheld, and a committee was constituted at the hospital to examine the matter.

The incident came amid ongoing tensions at the hospital, where junior doctors have been protesting, alleging that an on-duty postgraduate doctor was attacked by a patient attendant. The attendant’s family has accused doctors of physically assaulting her.

Robin Zaccheus, husband of the patient attendant, alleged on X that the hospital moved to discharge the elderly patient soon after complaints were filed with the SHRC, police authorities and the Telangana Medical Council.

“The head of department at Gandhi Hospital abruptly ordered the discharge of the patient at 1 pm today. This decision was taken immediately after our formal complaint against the duty doctor for physical assault on the patient’s attendant,” Zaccheus alleged in his post.

Responding to the allegation, Gandhi Hospital superintendent Dr N. Vani denied any link between the discharge and the dispute. She said the patient had completed treatment under the standard stroke protocol and was medically fit for discharge. “The patient was ready for discharge, and the treatment was completed as per stroke protocol,” Dr Vani said. The matter remains under examination by the committee constituted at the hospital.
