Maharaj Arrested For Raising Ganja Plants, Villagers Attack Police; 3 Cops Injured

ADILABAD: Villagers of Vaipet in Sirikonda mandal on Saturday attacked the police and damaged their vehicle when they went to arrest the village ‘maharaj’ Chahakatha Ramu, 62, for allegedly raising ganja plants. Ichoda circle inspector C. H. Ramesh, ASI Baliram and constable Shivaprasad were injured in the attack. Shivaprasad suffered a hand fracture and Ramesh head injuries. They were shifted to Sirikonda primary health centre for primary treatment and later to the RIMS, Adilabad.

After learning of the incident, additional police force was shifted to Vaipet and enforced prohibitory orders in the village.
On Friday, Sirikonda police, led by sub-inspector B. Vikram, raided Ramu’s house and seized 18 ganja plants worth `1.8 lakh from the backyard. Police took Ramu into custody, while he was trying to escape.
The police said Ramu raised ganja plants for his own consumption and also to sell them to make money. The police conducted the raid in the presence of an agriculture officer and village secretary.
