HYDERABAD: Untreated sewage from a non‑functional sewage treatment plant (STP) in Kollur was being discharged into a nearby lake and agricultural land through a stormwater drain, officials found during a joint inspection on Friday.

HMWS&SB managing director Ashok Reddy and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation commissioner G. Srijana inspected the area following complaints that sewage was entering water bodies and farmlands. Officials found that the 9 million litre a day (MLD) STP serving the government double‑bedroom housing colony in Kollur was not functioning, resulting in untreated wastewater being released.

They said rapid urbanisation in Kollur and surrounding areas has increased the need for a stronger sewage network. Ashok Reddy directed officials to submit proposals for funds to repair the STP, which is under the housing department. He also instructed preparation of a comprehensive sewage master plan for Kollur and nearby areas, including proposals for a major trunk sewer line to collect and transport sewage from the entire region.

Officials were asked to identify encroachments on stormwater drains and conduct a joint survey with the irrigation and revenue departments to demarcate boundaries. The HMWS&SB chief further directed identification of suitable government land for a new STP and expedited land allocation to meet future requirements.

Reddy said coordinated action involving multiple departments would be taken to provide a long‑term solution to sewage issues in Kollur. Officials from the water board, housing and irrigation department and local public representatives participated in the inspection.
