Labour Dept Is Now SHAKTI, Skills Varsity Under Its Umbrella
The change of name, according to the orders dated June 16 issued by the general administration department, was “in view of administrative exingencies”.
Hyderabad:The state government has changed the name of the labour, employment, training and factories department as the department of Skill Human Capital and Knowledge Training Initiatives (SHAKTI). The change of name, according to the orders dated June 16 issued by the general administration department, was “in view of administrative exingencies”.
It was believed, however, that the change of name into an acronym which stood for ‘empowerment’ was taken keeping in view the government’s shift of focus for a department long known for enforcement of labour rules and inspection of factories into a department geared towards employment generation through skilling of youth, and development of human capital, an endeavour that the state government has said is a priority.
That the rechristened SHAKTI indicated a drive towards reorienting the traditional roles of the department was also indicated in the orders issued in GO Ms. No. 97, which said that the Young India Skills University (YISU), which was with the industries and commerce department, will now come under the SHAKTI umbrella. The orders also said that all Industrial Training Institutes and Advanced Technology Centres in Telangana now stand integrated under YISU’s direct institutional umbrella, along with all polytechnic colleges which too will now be in the YISU ecosystem.
The government has also made it clear though administrative changes have been made with respect to YISU and its ecosystem, the ongoing admission processes for polytechnics and the YISU for the 2026-27 academic year will not be affected by the administrative restructuring.
