Kadam Project Authorities Underline Judicious Use of Water Due to Major Shortage
Authorities had released water from Kadam into the Godavari River last month following heavy rains
ADILABAD: Irrigation officials are emphasising on judicious use of water stored in the Kadam project. The current water storage is just 50 per cent of the total capacity due to both lack of rains and siltation of the project. Only 3,495 TMC of water is available against the total storage capacity of 7.5 TMC.
A Kadam project official, on condition of anonymity, said they are concerned and closely monitoring the situation. He said they are receiving small inflows from upstream. But the forecast on storage is not encouraging.
Irrigation officials said they are currently supplying 9 cusecs of water from Kadam to Mission Bhagiratha to meet the drinking water needs in downstream areas.
Authorities had released water from Kadam into the Godavari River last month following heavy rains. Farmers have cultivated paddy in a large area under the Kadam ayacut, though against the advice of agricultural officials.
Irrigation officials at Kadam had supplied water to paddy cultivated on 68,150 acres, including 66,000 acres under the left canal in Mancherial and Nirmal districts. On Wednesday, they released 457 cusecs of water into the left canal and 14 cusecs into the right canal.
