NIZAMABAD: Village Development Committees (VDCs) have curtailed the sale of ice-cream carts in several villages across Nizamabad district over the past two weeks, citing concerns over quality and safety.

The restrictions have been reported in villages in Armoor, Velpur, Morthad, Jakranpally and other mandals. In some instances, penalties of up to ₹5,000 have reportedly been imposed on vendors.

Villagers alleged that ice-creams were being made using substandard ingredients, including expired materials, artificial colours and harmful chemicals. Concerned about children’s health during the summer, many residents have refused to purchase ice-creams.

Sales have been halted in villages such as Anksapur in Velpur mandal, Ankapur in Armoor mandal, Padigela and others. VDCs, in coordination with village elders, have intervened to stop sales and monitor vendors.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ankapur resident Kishore Reddy said ice-cream sales depended on public confidence in quality. “If the products are safe, people will buy them. But there are health concerns during summer, and in some places, committees and officials are preventing sales,” he said.

Residents in several mandals, including Balkonda, have also reported health issues among children allegedly linked to ice-cream consumption. Ice-creams are mainly supplied from Nizamabad, Armoor and Nirmal towns.

Authorities and villagers are closely monitoring the situation as temperatures rise during the peak summer season.
