Passion Plays Bring Crucifixion of Christ to Life in Hyd

At Holy Family Church, Trimulgherry, the Passion Play was staged by parish youth and members, reflecting the church’s long history.

Hyderabad:Good Friday was observed across the twin cities with church services, processions and passion plays depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Churches held the traditional three-hour meditation services, concluding with the ringing of bells, while enactments of the Passion Play were staged at multiple locations.

At All Saints School grounds, a Passion Play was presented by the theatre team of St Joseph’s Cathedral, Gunfoundry. Director Arul Joseph Sober said, “All precautions and meticulous attention to detail were ensured during rehearsals to preserve the traditional essence of the act.”

Groups of participants were seen wearing coordinated T-shirts carrying Good Friday messages. Cyril Joy said, “We placed a group order for T-shirts featuring messages from the Bible. It reflects the creative spirit of this generation, with many groups using them as a canvas to express their own ideas.”

Participants who rehearsed for weeks took part in various roles, including those depicting Simon helping Jesus carry the cross and Veronica wiping his face. They described the experience as a significant moment.

At Hill Fort Road, the annual Hindi Passion Play marked its 116th year. The presentation featured musicians, including members associated with armed forces bands. Mario Ronald Lewis, a naval officer, said, “This passion play matches international ballet standards, leaving audiences visibly moved, with many in tears.”

At St Mary’s Basilica, Fr Raju Alex conducted the service, including a procession of the cross within the premises.

At Sacred Heart Church, South Lallaguda, Fr Johanna Mettu delivered the Good Friday message.

At the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Health, Khairatabad, parishioners witnessed enactments of the Passion Play.

The SPG Tamil Church near Secunderabad railway station held its traditional Good Friday service from 12 noon to 3 pm, where Resident Bishop Dr Moses Ashirwadam explained the significance of the crucifixion.
