State Govt Ropes in IIT-Bombay as Technical Advisor for Jawaharnagar Waste Facility

IIT-Bombay had filed a detailed proposal included an independent technical oversight and environmental monitoring, assessment of leachate management, groundwater, air quality and storm water system.

The state government on Thursday gave the nod for engaging the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay for providing technical advisory and consultancy services for the municipal solid waste (MSW) processing and disposal facility at Jawaharnagar.

Hyderabad:The state government on Thursday gave the nod for engaging the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay for providing technical advisory and consultancy services for the municipal solid waste (MSW) processing and disposal facility at Jawaharnagar.

The order was issued by Jayesh Ranjan, special chief secretary, metropolitan area and urban development, against the backdrop of the urgency to comply with directions of the National Green Tribunal (South Zone), which is monitoring the MSW processing and disposal facility.

IIT-Bombay had filed a detailed proposal included an independent technical oversight and environmental monitoring, assessment of leachate management, groundwater, air quality and storm water system.

Recommendations for decentralisation and reduction of MSW inflow, scientific studies for feasibility of biomining of legacy waste (subject to specified conditions) and advisory support during implementation were also part of the proposal.

GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan recently wrote a letter to the government seeking ratification of services of Dr D.N. Singh, IIT-Bombay professor, who has been engaged for the project.

The agreement is for providing technical advisory and consultancy services in respect of MSW processing and disposal at Jawaharnagar, including assessment of legacy waste and feasibility of biomining at a cost of `1.99 crore for two years.
