HYDERABAD: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been tasked with probing Koduri Chandrashekhar Azad alias Arjun Kumar’s gang, accused of targeting minors, girls and women belonging to well-to-do families and extorting lakhs of rupees.

Arjun, who was arrested earlier, has now been remanded to judicial custody. In connection with the case, SIT officials have taken his brother Rajeev Kumar into three‑day police custody after arresting him in Bengaluru. Investigators recovered his mobile phone, allegedly used to trap and extort victims. Cyber and forensic experts are working to retrieve deleted data said to contain sensitive videos, chats and photographs. Police sources said further arrests are likely based on Rajeev’s confession once his custody ends on Wednesday.

The gang, posing as wealthy individuals, allegedly extorted several victims from prominent families in the twin cities. Victims have begun coming forward after Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar constituted an exclusive SIT to probe the case, an officer disclosed.

The SIT, comprising senior officials along with counsellors from BHAROSA Woman Safety Wing and SHE Teams, is recording victim statements while ensuring privacy. “Our case is very sensitive. We appreciate the dedication of Commissioner Sajjanar, who himself is monitoring the probe. I urge the government to take stern action against these crooks playing with the lives of minors,” a victim’s family member said.

Police said the number of victims is increasing daily. The SIT may seek further custody of the prime accused during investigation. The team is led by two DCP‑rank officers, two SHOs and a Sub‑Inspector, supported by BHAROSA, SHE Teams and WSW officials.

The case surfaced after a complaint by a victim’s mother. A Pocso case was registered against prime accused Arjun, 22, his brother Rajeev, and conspirators including his mother Meena Kumari, uncle Prashant, brother Vinil Chaudhary, and friends Jithin and Hemanth. Jubilee Hills police have so far arrested nine gang members based on Arjun’s confession.
