Hyderabad: The city will get new street lights in a phased manner, with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for a comprehensive operation and maintenance contract. The project includes phase-wise replacement of existing LED street lights, installation of new lights where required, and upgrading the Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) with a live dashboard.

Currently, there are around 5.5 lakh LED street lights across the GHMC area, installed between 2017–18 and 2024–25. With an average lifespan of seven years, the existing LEDs will now be replaced in phases over the next seven years by the selected agency.

GHMC had earlier signed an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in May 2017 for replacing conventional lights with LEDs. As the installed lights near the end of their operational life, GHMC is initiating a fresh round of upgrades. While EESL has approached GHMC again for the project, corporation officials have asked the agency to participate in open bidding rather than submitting a direct proposal.

The agency selected through the tender process will be responsible not only for replacing the lights but also for operation and maintenance (O&M) of the street lighting infrastructure — including supply lines and poles — for seven years, extendable by two more years with mutual consent.
