First Shipment Of Telangana’s GI-Tagged Tandur Red Gram Exported To Australia
The consignment comprises 2.5 metric tonnes (MT) of GI-tagged Tandur redgram: Reports
HYDERABAD: Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has facilitated the first-ever export shipment of GI-tagged Tandur redgram from Telangana to Australia. The consignment has been flagged off from Hyderabad to Australia in a hybrid mode on Wednesday.
The consignment comprises 2.5 metric tonnes (MT) of GI-tagged Tandur redgram. Hyderabad-based Durga Exports and Imports is shipping the consignment by sea under the brand name AMMAAS. The shipment is being imported to Australia by Bharathma PTY Ltd., Australia.
Durga Exports and Imports is registered with APEDA and is engaged in the export of rice, pulses, spices, and groceries from Telangana. This shipment marks an important milestone in promoting Telangana's distinctive agricultural produce in international markets.
Secretary (Agriculture and Cooperation) Surendra Mohan and APEDA AGM R. P. Naidu flagged off the first consignment. Foreign Trade Regional Authority additional director Dr. Sampath Kumar, Sumanth R., exporter representing Durga Exports and Imports, and other APEDA officials had been present.
Tandur redgram is the first agricultural product from Telangana to receive Geographical Indication (GI) registration. It is primarily cultivated in rainfed tracts of four mandals in the Tandur region namely Tandur, Basheerabad, Peddemul, and Yelal.
The distinctive characteristics of Tandur redgram are linked to the region's fertile deep black soils, the presence of attapulgite clay mineral deposits, and substantial limestone deposits.
Tandur redgram contains approximately 22–24 per cent protein, nearly three times the protein content of cereals. It is valued for its excellent taste, superior cooking quality, and enhanced storage quality. Its GI identity offers an opportunity to strengthen product recognition, improve market visibility, and generate greater value through access to domestic and international markets.
The export shipment to Australia represents a significant step towards exploring new overseas markets for this distinctive agricultural product and expanding opportunities for farmers, producers, and exporters.
The initiative is expected to encourage further exploration of international markets for GI-tagged agricultural products and other agricultural commodities from Telangana.
