Seeman Dubs ‘Muthu Nagar’ Thoothukudi As ‘Kuthu Nagar’
NTK chief coordinator Seeman criticised the TVK government over rising murders in Tamil Nadu and questioned its handling of law and order and fishermen’s issues.
Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman on Thursday dubbed Thoothukudi a ‘Kuthu Nagar’ (city of stabbings), instead of its popular sobriquet ‘Muthu Nagar’ (pearl city), citing the spate of murders, and launched a scathing attack on the TVK government over the law and order situation.
Seeman, who arrived at the Thoothukudi airport from Chennai, was on way to appear before the Tirunelveli district court in connection with a sedition case against him for a speech at an NTK public meeting in Tirunelveli in 2009.
Speaking to the media, he alleged that law and order existed only on paper and that public safety had become an empty promise. Taking a dig at the ruling party, he said the DMK was a disgrace and the TVK, even worse. He also questioned the police action against those who allegedly mocked him, referring to the hasty arrest of economist, Prof. Kalaiarasan, for social media posts.
On the government’s alleged failure to curb crime, Seeman said the frequent murders reported across the state could be called ‘Vetri murders’ and thefts, ‘Vetri thefts’, playing on the ruling party’s name. He also mocked the government’s ‘Vetri Payanam’ (victory journey), calling it a ‘Vetru Payanam’ (empty journey).
On the imposition of a fine exceeding Rs. 4 crore on fishermen from Tharuvaikulam detained in the Maldives, Seeman alleged that Tamil fishermen were being singled out while Keralam fishermen crossing maritime boundaries were spared. He claimed that the problem was not that they were fishermen but for being Tamils.
