Quit To Strengthen BJP For 2029 Polls: Murugan
Threatens legal action against those spreading ‘defamatory’ claims: Reports
CHENNAI: L. Murugan has said he resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Union Council of Ministers to strengthen the BJP at the grassroots level in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He rejected allegations surrounding his resignation as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Murugan said he stepped down on October 13 after obtaining the approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said he intended to devote his full time to educating party cadres, expanding the BJP’s presence across Tamil Nadu and communicating the Centre’s welfare schemes, policies and funding to the public.
Condemning what he described as defamatory statements circulated through print, digital and social media, Murugan demanded that those responsible remove the content and issue public apologies. He warned that failure to comply would invite civil and criminal legal action.
“I reiterate that the sole purpose of my resignation is to work alongside party office-bearers and cadres at the grassroots level and strengthen the organisation in preparation for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections,” he said.
Murugan said he would travel across villages, meet people and work with senior leaders and party workers to expand the organisation.
Recalling his political journey, he said he came from a poor family in Konur village, where his parents earned their livelihood through daily-wage labour and tending livestock. He said his election to the Rajya Sabha twice and his service in Union ministries reflected the trust placed in him by the Prime Minister.
He also cited the Chennai Metro project, Thoothukudi Port expansion, highway projects and the redevelopment of 26 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme as examples of the Centre’s attention to Tamil Nadu.
Murugan reiterated that strengthening the party and preparing it for the 2029 elections remained the sole purpose of his resignation.
