CHENNAI: As the number of plus-2 students scoring centum in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Commerce has come down sharply, compared to last year, the cut-off marks for engineering courses and B.Com is likely to go down steeply this year.

The number of students who have scored a centum in Computer Science has come down and this is expected to bring down the cut-off marks for engineering and science degree courses related to the subject. The cut-off marks for Economics, one of the preferred arts degrees, will fall as the centum scorers have declined.

The number of centum in a subject gives an indication that the students in the subject have scored higher marks than the previous year.

A total of 683 students have scored a centum in Commerce, compared to 1,624 students last year, showing a big drop of about 60 per cent. But, the number of centum scorers in Accountancy has increased to 1,946 from 1,240 last year. Students who study in the Maths and Science groups have many options like engineering, medicine and science degrees. But, most of the students who have scored a centum in Commerce or studied Commerce as one of the subjects prefer B.Com while other subjects like Economics comes as second preference.

The number of centum scorers in Economics this year has fallen from 556 to 440, a sharp decline, and the cut-off marks for the subject is expected to ease this year. Computer Science degrees and engineering degrees related to the subject are likely to see less cut-off marks since the number of centum scorers has fallen from 9,536 to 6,945, a decrease of about 33 per cent. Those who have scored 100 marks in Computer Applications are 2,099 this year, down from 4,208.

In Mathematics, the number of students who have scored 100 marks is 732, while only 463 students received a centum in Business Maths. The number of takers for B.Sc (Maths) is coming down even at the top colleges but the marks in Mathematics will be a major criteria for engineering courses.

The number of centum scorers in Chemistry was 3,181 last year, and it has sharply fallen to 632 which is just one-fifth, compared to last year. In Physics, the number of students who scored 100 was 1,125 last year, but now it has decreased by 90 per cent to just 105 centum-scorers. The decrease in top-scorers in Maths, Physics and Chemistry is expected to decrease the cut-off for engineering courses and science this year.

The number of students who got 100 marks in Biology is 784, which is lower than the 827 centum-scorers last year. From 269 students who received a centum in Botany, those who got 100 in the subject has dropped to just 31 while it has fallen to 18 from 36 in Zoology. The marks in Biology, Botany and Zoology used to have an impact on admission to medical courses but after the introduction of Neet, the subjects are important only for admissions to science degrees in Botany and Zoology. A total of 83 students got 100 marks in Tamil and 21 students in English.
