The climb is part of her mission to complete the seven summits challenge.
Chennai:Sixteen-year-old Nisha Sasikumar from Chennai has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest woman in the world to summit Mount Everest via the South Col route from Nepal.
The climb is part of her mission to complete the seven summits challenge. Having already conquered six continental peaks, she is now preparing to attempt Denali in June and Vinson Massif later this year.
Nisha reached the 8,848.86-metre summit on May 25 as part of an expedition organised by Elite Exped. She was assisted during the climb by Sherpa guides Tenji Sherpa, Phura Dorji Sherpa and Phursang Sherpa and is currently descending safely from the mountain.
Born in Chennai, Nisha completed the climb at the age of 16 years and 80 days, adding a significant milestone to Indian mountaineering history.
Speaking after the achievement, Nisha said standing on top of the world was a surreal experience and that the expedition taught her the value of resilience, preparation and self-belief.
Her father, Sasikumar Gendham, described the achievement as a proud moment for the family and praised her determination and commitment to achieving her goal.
Nisha began her Everest expedition in April, trekking from Lukla to Everest base camp before undergoing acclimatisation and training for the final ascent.
