Visakhapatnam: DRI Seizes Gold Worth Rs 8.98 Crore
Three packets containing 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat gold of 999 purity were recovered from the concealed compartment.
Visakhapatnam: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials seized 5.83 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at Rs 8.98 crore, while it was being transported from Kolkata to Hyderabad by car.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials kept a close watch on a national highway. Following a prolonged chase, they intercepted a car carrying two passengers in Visakhapatnam on the night of October 8–9.
During an extensive search of the vehicle and subsequent questioning of the occupants, officials discovered a specially fabricated cavity beneath the leg space of the front passenger seat.
Three packets containing 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat gold of 999 purity were recovered from the concealed compartment. The gold, valued at Rs 8.98 crore at market prices, was allegedly smuggled into India through the India-Bangladesh border and was being transported to Hyderabad.
The recovered gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Both occupants were arrested and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody.
Further investigation is underway.
