Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is setting up a special drainage system at the national-level Saras fair, scheduled to begin on October 13, to prevent wastewater stagnation and maintain hygienic conditions.

VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra said the arrangements were being made in view of the expected large turnout of visitors from various states.

On Saturday, the commissioner inspected the arrangements at Bhavanipuram and directed officials to ensure that all facilities were in place to avoid inconvenience to visitors.

He instructed officials to establish the special drainage network to ensure the continuous flow and disposal of wastewater. Engineering officials were asked to provide underground drainage facilities wherever necessary and ensure the system functioned efficiently. He also called for regular monitoring to identify and address drainage-related problems promptly.

Dhyanachandra directed sanitation and health teams to ensure the regular removal of accumulated waste and maintain cleanliness across the fairgrounds and surrounding areas. He stressed coordination among all departments concerned to safeguard public health and ensure visitor convenience.

The inspection was attended by chief engineer P. Satyakumari, executive engineer Srinivas, chief medical health officer Dr Ch. Nirmala Glory, assistant medical health officer Dr P. Annapurna and deputy commissioner (revenue) G. Srujana, among others.
