Tirupati ROs’ List Revised After Erroneous Inclusion Of Retired Officials

TIRUPATI: A list prepared by Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) for appointment of returning officers (ROs) has come under scrutiny after names of some officials who have retired from service figured on the list.
According to sources, when the Municipal Administration department scrutinized the proceedings prepared by the civic body for the forthcoming municipal elections, it sought clarification over inclusion of retired personnel on a panel meant for election duties.
This led to preparation of fresh proceedings, which have been forwarded to Tirupati district collector and district election officer Dr. S. Venkateswar for approval. However, the development has raised questions over verification of the service status of officials before their names are included in election-related proceedings.
The department has sought accountability for the lapse and asked officials how names of retired personnel figured on the list.
Disciplinary action against a senior official responsible for the proceedings may be considered, sources said.
Under the municipal election framework, returning officers for municipal corporations are nominated by the municipal commissioner with the approval of the State Election Commissioner. The appointment process requires the proposed officials to be identified and processed before the appointments receive the necessary approval.
