Somireddy Wants Sarvepalli Within Nellore After Districts' Reorganisation

Providing rationale for retaining Sarvepalli in Nellore district, the MLA pointed out that Sarvepalli surrounds Nellore city, with Totapalligudur and Muthukur mandals to the east, Podalakur to the west, and Venkatachalam to the south, all of them economically and administratively connected to Nellore.

Nellore: Former minister and Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy has requested the Andhra Pradesh cabinet sub-committee on district reorganisation to retain Sarvepalli constituency in Sri Potti Sriramulu (SPS) Nellore district, instead of merging it with the proposed Gudur district.

In his detailed representation mailed to the cabinet sub-committee on Wednesday, Somireddy welcomed the process of district reorganising the districts as part of the NDA coalition government’s election promises. However, he expressed concern over reports suggesting that Sarvepalli would be moved to the new Gudur district.

Somireddy recalled that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had publicly promised to merge Kandukur constituency with Prakasam district, in line with local aspirations. Similarly, Gudur MLA Pasam Sunil Kumar and the public have requested that Gudur constituency remain in SPS Nellore district, a request to which the CM has reportedly responded positively.

Somireddy warned that moving Sarvepalli to Gudur would mean residents of several mandals will have to travel via Nellore to reach the new district headquarters. In the process, Nellore would also lose Krishnapatnam Port. He pointed out that with Kandukur’s shift to Prakasam, Ramayapatnam Port has already been taken away. “Nellore district will be left with nothing but sowing jowar and harvesting paddy,” the MLA remarked.

Further, Somireddy warned that Nellore’s importance would be diminished with the loss of major assets like ports, Vikrama Simhapuri University, and key irrigation resources. Most of the ayacut under the Somasila Project lies in Kovur and Somireddy constituencies, and moving Sarvepalli could disrupt irrigation for farmers.

The Somireddy MLA appealed to the cabinet sub-committee to carefully consider public convenience, potential administrative challenges and the overall impact on Nellore before taking a decision. “In line with the wishes of the people of my constituency, Sarvepalli should remain in SPS Nellore district,” Somireddy reiterated.
