Visakhapatnam: The continuous rainfall that began on Monday evening failed to deter Ganesh Puja revellers in Visakhapatnam and other parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The region’s oldest Poorna Market was abuzz with people buying flowers, fruits, patri and other traditional puja material, braving the drizzle. People carrying umbrellas also packed the MVP Colony Rythu Bazaar, where there was no space left for vehicle parking. A similar rush was witnessed across all 13 rythu bazaars in Visakhapatnam city.

The marketing department kept the bazaars open even though it was a holiday for MVP Colony Rythu Bazaar (Wednesday) and Three Town area Bazaar (Tuesday).

The IMD, Amaravati, also brought good news, announcing that there would not be much rain in the state on Wednesday, the main puja day.

“On Wednesday only Eluru and ASR districts will receive rainfall, while the rest of the state may experience thunderstorms in a few places,” senior IMD scientist Dr S. Karunasagar told this correspondent. Rains also stopped in Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas after 4 pm.

Puja organisers are also taking precautionary measures to protect devotees from rain by erecting shamianas.

“We are not taking any chances. We are making all arrangements to provide shelter to the people visiting our pandal,” said Krishna Kumar, who along with his group of friends is celebrating the puja in East Point Colony.

Similar measures were taken by organisers at Gajuwaka, where two of the tallest idols have been installed, as well as at Dondaparthi, Akkayyapalem and Seethampeta.

“We have 40 shops within the pandal
