Volunteers To Be Appointed For Increasing Literacy In Kurnool District

KURNOOL: Collector Dr. A. Siri said the state government has decided to appoint 16,191 volunteers to spread literacy among 1,61,914 illiterate persons identified in Kurnool district.

The collector disclosed these numbers while reviewing details of the Akshara Andhra Literacy Programme being implemented in the district as part of the Unified Family Survey.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Siri said steps are being taken to ensure that all identified illiterates are covered under the Akshara Andhra programme. DRDA, DWAMA and MEPMA are appointing volunteers with each of them being given the task of making 10 learners literate.

According to the collector, 45,000 learners have been identified for being educated under the Akshara Andhra programme. Arrangements are being made to ensure that the remaining of the total 1,16,914 persons also become literates at the earliest.

With regard to the Unified Family Survey, Dr. Siri said of the 7,37,221 households across the district, 1,15,768 households have been surveyed. Officials have been instructed to speed up the remaining work.

The collector stressed on coordinated efforts among departments to achieve the targets within the stipulated time.
