Nellore Civic Body Warns of Strict Action Against Single-Use Plastics
He warned that repeated violations could lead to cancellation of trade licences and sealing of commercial establishments
NELLORE: Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) commissioner Y.O. Nandan on Saturday warned of strict enforcement of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, with legal action and penalties against those using, selling or stocking banned single-use plastic items.
The prohibited items include plastic carry bags below 120 microns, single-use plastic cups, glasses, plates, spoons, forks and straws, thermocol decorative materials, plastic flags, ice cream sticks, and plastic wrappers and films.
The commissioner said street vendors found violating the rules would be fined `2,500 for the first offence and `5,000 for the second. Shops, supermarkets, hotels and other commercial establishments would face a penalty of `20,000 for the first violation and `40,000 for repeat offences.
He warned that repeated violations could lead to cancellation of trade licences and sealing of commercial establishments.
Nandan said special NMC task force teams would conduct regular inspections across the city and appealed to residents and traders to use biodegradable, paper or cloth bags in support of the drive to make Nellore a plastic-free city.
