Andhra Pradesh: CPI Says ‘Cockroach’ Remark Became Symbol Of Youth Protest
“Attempts to mislead the movement and sarcastically brand the protesters as ‘cockroaches’ only united the youth and intensified the struggle": Senior CPI leader Dr K. Narayana
NELLORE: Senior CPI leader Dr K. Narayana on Saturday claimed that the youth movement, symbolised by the term ‘Cockroach’ (Kakroch), had evolved into a symbol of democratic resistance despite attempts to ridicule it.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to Nellore to pay tributes to veteran CPI leader Pamujula Dasaradharamaiah, who died earlier in the day, Narayana alleged that remarks by the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India against the protesters had strengthened the agitation.
“Attempts to mislead the movement and sarcastically brand the protesters as ‘cockroaches’ only united the youth and intensified the struggle,” he said.
Narayana claimed that although tensions had eased following the resignation of the Union education minister, the agitation had conveyed a strong message against what he described as “lies, arrogance and disregard for democratic voices.”
He further stated that the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India should be answerable to society for their comments and actions relating to the movement.
Congratulating the youth and others who participated in the protest, Narayana said the movement would remain an example of democratic resistance.
Earlier, Narayana met the family members of late CPI leader Pamujula Dasaradharamaiah in Nellore and conveyed his condolences, recalling the veteran leader’s contribution to the Communist movement and public causes.
