Tirupati: A month-long sanitation drive under the state government’s “Operation Clean Sweep” programme was launched in Tirupati on Monday to improve cleanliness and public health. District collector Dr S. Venkateswar, MLA Arani Srinivasulu and Tirupati Municipal Corporation in-charge commissioner Sharada Devi participated in the programme at LS Nagar. The collector said the initiative would be implemented across municipal corporations, municipalities and gram panchayats through dedicated teams focusing on garbage removal, desilting of drains and resolution of sanitation issues.
He noted that Tirupati has about 25 km of stormwater drains and 65 km of major drainage canals. Accumulated waste in these drains could cause waterlogging, flooding and the spread of diseases such as dengue, malaria, filariasis and chikungunya during the monsoon. Dr Venkateswar said cleaning and repair works were underway and urged residents to support 100 per cent segregation of wet and dry waste. He added that Tirupati aims to secure another top ranking in the Swachh Survekshan awards through collective public participation and sustained sanitation efforts.
