VIJAYAWADA: Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has called for a reassessment of taxes being paid by industries and educational institutions located within gram panchayat limits, expressing concern over what he described as widespread tax evasion.

During a high-level review meeting with senior officials, the deputy Chief minister directed the constitution of an empowered committee to examine tax collections and compliance in gram panchayats.

He asked the committee to submit its findings within a week after studying the number of industries and educational institutions functioning in gram panchayat areas, the volume of waste generated by them, their water consumption and the taxes being paid to local bodies.

Pawan Kalyan said the review was aimed at ensuring that gram panchayats receive their legitimate revenues and that institutions contribute appropriately towards local civic services.

He also instructed officials to discharge their responsibilities with accountability to the public and the government while ensuring transparency in the assessment process.
