Kadapa: A life convict lodged in Kadapa Central Jail escaped from police custody on Thursday while being brought back from Visakhapatnam after undergoing medical treatment.
The convict, identified as Sake Rajkumar, has been serving a life sentence in Kadapa Central Jail and is facing multiple criminal cases. Jail authorities had shifted him to a mental health facility in Visakhapatnam on April 22 for treatment.
After nearly two months of treatment, Rajkumar was being transported back to Kadapa by Tirumala Express under police escort. Two Armed Reserve constables and an assistant sub-inspector were accompanying him, along with another inmate, Laxman.
Police said Rajkumar informed the escorting personnel that he was going to the restroom during the journey. He allegedly escaped near Gudur railway station in Nellore district and fled from custody. Immediate efforts by the escort team to trace him were unsuccessful.
Following the incident, the escorting staff informed Kadapa Central Jail authorities. Police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding convict.
“We have formed special teams and intensified the search in and around Gudur and adjoining areas,” a police official said.
