IIM-B Team Studies Freight Potential in Guntur Division
The IIM-B team held detailed discussions with Guntur railway division officials and stakeholders
VIJAYAWADA: A team from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) visited the Guntur railway divisional office on Wednesday as part of a joint freight logistics market study with Indian railways aimed at identifying new avenues to boost rail freight.
The study seeks to assess the freight market and identify opportunities to improve the rail coefficient by analysing emerging commodities, freight demand, logistics requirements and strategies to make rail transport more competitive.
During the visit, the IIM-B team held detailed discussions with Guntur railway division officials and stakeholders on commodity-wise freight potential, loading and unloading patterns, major freight terminals, rail connectivity, terminal infrastructure and operational requirements.
The discussions also examined the competitiveness of rail freight against other modes of transportation and explored areas where better connectivity, infrastructure and customer-orientated logistics solutions could attract additional freight traffic to the rail network.
The exercise is part of a broader collaboration between IIM-B and Indian Railways to assess existing and emerging industrial sectors and commodities, understand freight movement patterns and formulate data-driven strategies to increase rail freight volumes.
The team and railway officials also identified areas requiring further assessment and stakeholder engagement, with the objective of improving freight business and logistics efficiency in the region.
