Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer participated in the West Bengal Formation Day celebrations held at Lok Bhavan on Saturday under the 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' programme.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said West Bengal is a hub of cultural activity and that Kolkata is widely regarded as the cultural capital of India.

He observed that the people of West Bengal had played a leading role in India's freedom movement and that several eminent national leaders had emerged from the state. He noted that India's national flag was first hoisted in Calcutta and that both the national anthem and the national song originated in West Bengal.

The programme began with a video message from West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, followed by an address by Dr Subbalakshmi and cultural presentations marking the occasion.
