VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer on Thursday visited the Polavaram irrigation project and reviewed the progress of key works, as the government announced completion of the diaphragm wall.

Minister for water resources Nimmala Ramanaidu said the crucial component was completed and efforts are under way to finish the project before the Godavari Pushkaralu in 2027, as directed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

He said the project aims to utilise 322.73 tmc ft of Godavari water and store 194.6 tmc ft, which would support irrigation across lakhs of acres, provide drinking water to 28.5 lakh people in 540 villages, generate 940 MW of hydro-electric power and meet industrial needs.

The minister said 91,949 acres have been acquired so far out of the targeted one lakh acres. Under phase I, 16,291 project displaced families have been rehabilitated out of 38,060, and efforts are under way to relocate the remaining families by March 2027.

He added that ₹27,013 crore has been spent on the project so far.

The Governor appreciated the efforts of engineers and said the project would greatly benefit the state once completed.
