Guntur Municipal Corporation— DC File

VIJAYAWADA: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has sought the dismissal of two APCOS employees for violating the Model Code of Conduct during the municipal elections.

GMC commissioner and additional election authority K. Mayur Ashok said letters had been sent to the district collector and APCOS managing director seeking action against the employees.

Eedulamudi Sarojini Devi, an unskilled worker with the GMC, filed her nomination as a corporator from Ward 67 without resigning from her job. Shaik Anjathulla, an electrician at the GMC head water works, took part in election campaigning in violation of rules governing government employees.

Mayur Ashok warned that government employees must not participate in election campaigns and that violations would invite stringent action under Election Commission guidelines.

In a separate directive, the commissioner outlined conduct rules for government employees during the municipal elections, citing state government G.O. Rt. No. 1288, issued by the municipal administration and urban development department on October 17, 2026.

Eligible employees may exercise their voting rights, but their choice of candidate must remain confidential. They must also perform assigned election duties impartially and responsibly.

Employees are prohibited from participating in political campaigns, meetings and rallies; using their official positions to favour parties or candidates; displaying party symbols or colours on vehicles, residences or their persons; and serving as election, polling or counting agents for candidates.

Negligence in official duties may attract a fine of up to Rs 500 under the relevant Andhra Pradesh municipal laws. Acting as an election agent can invite imprisonment of up to three months, a fine, or both. Booth capturing and intimidating voters are punishable by imprisonment of three to five years and a fine, the directive stated.
