Visakhapatnam: Mostly dry weather will prevail in the Bhogapuram area on Saturday morning when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the ASR (Bhogapuram) International Airport in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and others.

“There are no indications of rainfall through a depression centred in Chhattisgarh and its clouds touching parts of north Andhra. Dry weather is likely to prevail in the morning hours, and it might rain in the afternoon after the scheduled departure of the Prime Minister,’’ said cyclone warning centre director P.L.N. Murthy.

An official from Vizianagaram said since the public meeting would be held under hangars, rain would not have any impact on the events.

Airport sources said even if it rains, there would be no flooding, as the aerodrome is located 188 feet above sea level, unlike Visakhapatnam city airport, which is located at 15 feet above sea level and floods during heavy rain.

The higher elevation at Bhogapuram is because the airport is located on gently rising terrain a few kilometres inland from the Bay of Bengal.

Despite being only about two km from the coastline, the airport platform sits around 57 metres (188 ft) above mean sea level, which also provides a greater buffer against coastal flooding and storm surges than a typical low-lying coastal airport.
