Archbishop Mallavarapu Prakash Passes Away
Dr Prakash served as Bishop of the Vijayawada Catholic Diocese from 2002 to 2012 before heading the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam as Archbishop from 2012 until his retirement in 2024
VIJAYAWADA: The Christian community across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana mourned the demise of retired Archbishop Most Rev. Dr Mallavarapu Prakash, 77, who passed away at around 2.30 am on Sunday while undergoing treatment for cardiac and respiratory ailments at a hospital in Visakhapatnam.
Dr Prakash served as Bishop of the Vijayawada Catholic Diocese from 2002 to 2012 before heading the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam as Archbishop from 2012 until his retirement in 2024.
Paying tributes, Vijayawada Bishop Most Rev. Dr Telagathoti Joseph Raja Rao described his services as “memorable and invaluable” and said his death was an irreparable loss to the Christian community. Church leaders, including Monsignor Fr. Muvvala Prasad and Vicar General Fr. M. Gabriel, recalled his dedication to faith, charity and social service.
Born on January 29, 1949, in Jadijamalpur of Nizamabad district, Dr Prakash was ordained a priest on October 10, 1979. Consecrated Bishop on July 22, 1998, he served as Bishop of Kadapa until 2002 and earned recognition for his work among the poor, orphans and the needy.
