Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government medical colleges are expected to get a minimum of 150 additional medical seats each in both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the academic year 2026-27. This is in the wake of National Medical Commission (NMC)’s scheduled inspection of colleges that have applied for sanction of additional seats.

At present, AP has 3,115 seats in 17 government medical colleges. The college in Paderu is expected to get 50 seats for sure to begin with.

Now that the National Testing Agency is getting ready for a re-conduct of NEET-UG on June 21 after revoking the earlier test owing to irregularities, the AP Medical Education authorities are expecting the NMC to visit colleges that have applied for increase in the number of seats. Post inspection, the commission is expected to sanction the additional seats.

With regard to PG, AP has 2,041 seats in 16 government medical colleges. It is expected that post-graduate seats will also go up by 150 additional seats.

The visit of NMC, sanction of permission for additional seats, and commencement of classes are likely to begin from September or October.

The sanction of additional seats to government colleges in both UG and PG courses will depend upon certain key factors, like availability of proper and adequate medical infrastructure, human resources, clinical material, number of in-patient and out-patient wards, conduct of surgeries and deliveries, and a host of other factors.

State authorities are confident of passing the scrutiny of NMC when it comes to the old government medical colleges. But there may be some trouble especially in the newly sanctioned medical colleges. This will be with regard to various criteria, the key one being the number of patients in both the OP and IP wards.

The intention of National Medical Commission is to ensure availability of all requisite infrastructures and the availability of sufficient number of patients, so that students will get a good practical exposure while pursuing their UG and PG medicine courses.

There is an issue with the government medical college in Piduguralla. Currently, its OP ward is getting nearly 100 patients only per day. Authorities are making all out efforts to get more patients by involving health personnel like ANMs, who would mobilise patients to visit the hospital nearer to their homes for medical treatment.

A senior official from the Directorate of Medical Education said, “We are confident of getting at least 150 additional seats each in both the UG and PG courses in the government colleges from the new academic year, as we have fulfilled all criteria for sanction of the new seats by NMC.” This will be a major achievement, as no state in the country has been sanctioned new medical seats in their existing government medical colleges.
