AP Governor Urges Agri Universities to Guide Farmers on Drought-Resistant Crops
He stressed that sustainable agriculture was essential for ensuring future food security
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer on Saturday called upon agricultural universities, including Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), to play a key role in monitoring weather anomalies caused by El Nino and advising the government on contingency measures.
Presiding over the 58th annual convocation of ANGRAU at Bapatla, the Governor urged agricultural universities to guide farmers on cultivating drought-resistant crops, optimising groundwater use and demonstrating climate-resilient farming practices.
Nazeer said El Nino was disrupting Indian agriculture by triggering drought-like conditions and affecting water-intensive Kharif crops such as paddy, maize and pulses. He stressed that sustainable agriculture was essential for ensuring future food security.
The Governor commended ANGRAU for its research achievements and its contribution to regional and national agricultural development through the production and distribution of quality seeds to farmers.
He also congratulated K. Ravindranath, retired cotton breeder, on being conferred the Honoris Causa by the university in recognition of his contribution to improving cotton cultivation.
