Annamayya District Steps Up Road Safety Measures

Tirupati: The Annamayya district administration has decided to strengthen road safety by improving accident-prone junctions and black spots while intensifying traffic enforcement across the district.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee chaired by in-charge district collector Shiv Narayan Sharma at the collectorate in Madanapalle on Tuesday. District superintendent of police Dheeraj Kunubilli and officials from various departments attended the meeting.

As part of the initiative, safety measures will be implemented at 236 locations where village roads intersect with national and state highways. Speed breakers have already been laid at 108 locations, while the remaining sites will be covered on priority.

The administration also decided to complete safety works at the remaining seven of the 18 identified accident black spots by providing speed breakers, warning signboards, street lighting and speed detection cameras wherever required.

The police and transport departments have been directed to launch a joint drive against vehicles fitted with illegal modified silencers. Officials will also intensify enforcement of helmet use and ensure that tractors operating on highways are fitted with reflective tapes and warning lights to improve visibility.

Special traffic enforcement will be carried out between 3 pm and 9 pm, when a majority of road accidents are reported.

Officials noted that road accidents increased during June and July after registering a decline during the first five months of the year.

To strengthen emergency response, the health department has been asked to submit proposals for establishing a trauma care centre near the national highway at Madanapalle. Hospitals and police have also been directed to provide immediate treatment to accident victims without insisting on procedural formalities and to strictly implement the Good Samaritan guidelines.

The administration further instructed officials to prepare proposals for alternative traffic routes and identify suitable government and private land to ease congestion around the Madanapalle tomato market.
