KOLKATA: After coming to power in West Bengal for the first time, BJP has now set its eyes on sweeping the Municipal Election which is expected to be held in December in the state.

Union minister of state for education Sukanta Majumdar, who has been included in a party panel for the civic body polls in Kolkata, asserted on Wednesday of winning more than 150 wards among 209 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) after the delimitation of 144 wards that existed earlier.

He also predicted that the BJP tally can even go upto 170. “Our party will select the candidates. It has a structure from the state president to chief minister. Now a committee has been formed. It will pick the names from ground level and then scrutinise them,” Mr Majumdar said.

He elaborated, “The final approval will come from our state president. His stand is clear. We didn't contest the Assembly polls in an alliance. We fought alone and won so many seats. Naturally we haven't discussed seat sharing for alliance.”

The union minister added, “According to the Assembly Election results, BJP has been leading in 101 wards. The Trinamul Congress has been crushed there. Now the number of seats has grown to 209. We expect to win more than 150 among them. I however think that we can get around 170-180.”

On Tuesday, Mr Majumdar was made state BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya the in-charge of a four-member panel for the upcoming KMC polls.
