India Pushes Black Sea Plan in Ukraine Talks
The statement came days after Ukraine said India had submitted one of four proposals for a possible ceasefire, describing the Indian proposal as the “broadest”.
New Delhi:India has been engaging both Russia and Ukraine in efforts to promote peace and its initiative has been appreciated by both sides, the external affairs ministry said on Wednesday.
The statement came days after Ukraine said India had submitted one of four proposals for a possible ceasefire, describing the Indian proposal as the “broadest”.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India was in talks with Moscow and Kyiv on issues including safe shipping in the Black Sea, grain and energy exports and possible non-attack arrangements.
“We have ongoing conversations with both Russia and Ukraine in this regard,” he said.
Jaiswal reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy were the way forward and that solutions to the conflict would not emerge from the battlefield.
He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the time had come for “endless war to give way to end of war”.
External affairs minister S. Jaishankar had earlier said that even agreement between Russia and Ukraine on limited issues would be a positive development.
Speaking recently at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Jaishankar said India remained in contact with both sides and believed the effort was worth pursuing despite the difficulty of the situation.
At the Munich Leaders’ Meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, he said India had moved in recent months from merely advocating dialogue to becoming more directly involved in conversations with both sides.
Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha had said proposals for a possible ceasefire had been received from India, Turkiye, Egypt and the United States.
