RAIPUR: ‘Mystery’ serial deaths of eight people over four months in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar district has triggered rumours of human sacrifice for hidden treasure hunt, leading the police to exhume the body of one of the deceased to conduct forensic tests.
According to the police, eight people in the village of Kharve under Kasdol police station died between February and May this year allegedly due to consumption of spurious liquor.
The villagers lodged a complaint with the Kasdol police station recently alleging that all the eight deceased, aged between 42-55 years, were served liquor laced with poison by the local grocery shop owner Ramsai Jaiswal.
Some of the villagers suspected that the trader was doing black magic to hunt hidden treasure and may be linked to the deaths of the eight people for the purpose, according to the police.
Police said that Jaiswal refuted the allegations during interrogation.
Police however said that all of the deceased were addicted to liquor and had direct or indirect links to the trader.
Seven of the eight deceased were buried as per the customs of Kabir Panthi, according to the police.
A team of police personnel, revenue officials and Forensic Science Laboratory experts, along with a forensic scientist from Sarangarh, exhumed the remains of one of the deceased, identified as Mhetru Sahu, on Saturday for postmortem, local sub-divisional officer of police Kaushal Kishore Wasnik said.
Sahu died on May 14.
The remains have been sent to the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur for the post-mortem.
