BJP Nominates Debashish Samantaray For Odisha Rajya Sabha Bypoll
The BJP Central Election Committee announced Samantaray's candidature for the June 18 bypoll, which was necessitated following his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and subsequent exit from the BJD.
Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday nominated former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Debashish Samantaray as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Odisha, days after he resigned from the regional party and vacated his Upper House seat.
The BJP Central Election Committee announced Samantaray's candidature for the June 18 bypoll, which was necessitated following his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and subsequent exit from the BJD.
Samantaray, a prominent political figure from Cuttack with decades of experience in Odisha politics, joined the BJP shortly after severing ties with the BJD. His induction into the saffron party had triggered speculation about a possible Rajya Sabha renomination, which was formally confirmed with Thursday's announcement.
The by-election is being closely watched as one of the first major political developments following Samantaray's switch of allegiance from the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD to the BJP. Political observers view the nomination as a strategic move by the BJP to consolidate its position in Odisha by inducting experienced leaders with a strong regional base.
Given the BJP's current political strength in the Odisha Assembly and support from its allies, Samantaray is widely expected to have a smooth passage to the Upper House.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Bhubaneswar on May 27 after joining the BJP, Samantaray had hinted at significant political developments following his move.
“I will not engage in showmanship before the media, but people in Odisha will soon witness the political consequences of my decision to join the BJP,” he had said.
When asked whether he expected to return to the Rajya Sabha, Samantaray had responded cautiously, saying, “Everything depends on the blessings and wishes of Lord Jagannath.”
The nomination has generated considerable interest in political circles, with attention now shifting to the June 18 bypoll and its implications for the evolving political landscape in Odisha.
