Mumbai: While many murky details have emerged in the Sheena Bora murder case, the police is still trying to solve the mystery of two crucial pieces of evidence, the body and the murder weapon. As reported earlier, the police at Pen, Raigad, had recovered a body in May 2012, which was believed to be Sheena’s.

The Mumbai police also claimed the body was sent to Mumbai FSL for DNA sampling. However, the Pen police did not have the copy of the report and the FSL did not have its records. It has now emerged that the body was sent to J.J. Hospital, and the Khar police on Friday collected some remains from the hospital and sent these to the FSL. The police has also found more remains in Pen.

J.J. Hospital dean T.P. Lahane confirmed that the police on Friday collected pieces of bones sent to the hospital in May 2012, a month after Sheena’s body was burnt by pouring petrol and dumped in Raigad. “Today, the Khar police came to the hospital and collected the bones from us,” Mr Lahane said, adding the hospital had sent a report on the earlier samples that were sent, saying “it cannot determine the age, sex or cause of death on the basis of the bones sent by the Pen police”.

In another development, a Mumbai police team went to the spot where the Pen police buried the rest of the remains from the body found in 2012. They policeman who buried the remains then led them to the spot after which they dug out the rest of the body. A team of five forensic experts was also present.

Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria confirmed this. “Our team went to Raigad this morning and found the skeletal remains, which we suspect are of Sheena Bora. We have recorded the statement of third accused (Sanjeev Khanna), who has confessed his complicity in the crime. We have also got a few points from Mikhail (Sheena’s brother) and are verifying it,” added Mr Maria.

Joint CP (law and order) Deven Bharati said these new samples had been sent for testing, “We have sent the samples to Kalina FSL and will soon get the FSL report,” he said, adding that the results of the tests will be very crucial as Indrani was not cooperating. “We will now concentrate on Sanjeev Khanna’s interrogation. We know the motive behind the murder. We just need to get it out of Indrani and Khanna,” added a senior officer.

The other unsolved mystery is of the murder weapon. Driver S. Rai said Sheena was killed by strangulation and public prosecutor Laksman Rathod sought Khanna’s custody on the grounds that the investigation officer wanted to recover the weapon used in the murder. The police is also trying to get clarity on the vehicle used to dispose of the body and is trying to ascertain who had provided it.

Maria also confirmed the police had found Sheena’s passport from Guwahati, which negates Indrani’s theory that she had gone to the United States.
