Healthy Lifestyle Can Prevent 85% of Cancers: Dr Raju Naidu

Regular physical activity, nutritious food, adequate sleep and stress-free living play a crucial role in cancer prevention

Vijayawada: Eminent cancer specialist Dr D.S. Raju Naidu said that adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent nearly 85 per cent of cancer cases if people remain aware and take timely precautions. He was speaking at an awareness programme organised by the Praja Arogya Vedika, NTR district committee, on the occasion of World Cancer Day at Vijayawada on Wednesday. The programme also featured the release of the book “Cancers-Early Detection Methods and Preventive Measures”.

Dr Naidu, who is the president of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Andhra Pradesh chapter, said cancer cases were increasing rapidly at both national and state levels. He stressed that regular physical activity, nutritious food, adequate sleep and stress-free living play a crucial role in cancer prevention. Breast and cervical cancers are more common among women, while tobacco use is the main cause of oral and lung cancers among men, he noted. Cancers caused by the Human Papilloma Virus can be largely prevented through personal hygiene and vaccination.
Emphasising early detection, Dr Naidu urged people to undergo regular screening. He appreciated Praja Arogya Vedika for its public health initiatives and called for collective efforts to fight cancer. Speakers from various organisations lauded the forum’s medical camps and awareness drives. District general secretary G. Vijay Prakash outlined its work on kidney diseases, pollution, mental health and women’s and children’s health.
