What-Er Revival!
As climate change and urbanisation threaten India’s rivers and lakes, grassroots conservation efforts are proving that restoring water is the first step towards restoring life itself
India has one of the world’s oldest traditions of water conservation. Ancient temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, stepwells in Gujarat, johads in Rajasthan and intricate irrigation systems in Kashmir once reflected a civilisation that understood every drop of water mattered. Yet rapid urbanisation, unchecked pollution, encroachment and climate change have left thousands of rivers, lakes and ponds struggling for survival. Today, organisations like the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), together with local communities, students and environmental volunteers, are proving that restoration is not just possible, it can transform entire ecosystems.
The Southern Revival
Tamil Nadu has become one of India’s most inspiring examples of citizen-led water restoration. EFI has restored hundreds of lakes, temple tanks and ponds across Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur and other districts.
Many of these water bodies had become dumping sites filled with construction debris and sewage. Restoration involved removing waste, reviving feeder channels and allowing natural rainwater recharge instead of relying on expensive engineering solutions.
The results have been dramatic. Groundwater levels have improved in surrounding neighbourhoods. Native fish have returned. Migratory birds once absent for years now visit restored wetlands. Residents who had forgotten these lakes existed now walk around them every morning. “People often think we’re restoring lakes. We’re actually restoring relationships between people and water, between wildlife and habitat, and between cities and nature,” says Samisha Poojari, a green warrior cum EFI volunteer.
For a city like Chennai, which has experienced both devastating floods and severe water shortages, healthy lakes have become crucial buffers against climate extremes. “People avoided this area for years. Now families come here every evening, and our businesses have benefited too. Clean water has revived the entire neighbourhood,” says Hari Naidu (name changed), a shopkeeper from Chennai.
The Northern Challenge
Further north, the Yamuna tells a different story. Flowing through Delhi, one of India's largest cities, the river carries enormous ecological and cultural significance. Yet pollution, untreated sewage and industrial waste have left long stretches heavily contaminated.
While restoring a river as vast as the Yamuna requires government intervention, local environmental groups continue cleaning tributaries, wetlands and floodplains that feed into the river. These smaller efforts improve biodiversity, create public awareness and remind communities that rivers cannot survive without local stewardship. Across Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh too, village-led spring restoration projects are reviving mountain water sources threatened by changing rainfall patterns. Protecting forests around these springs has helped improve water availability even during dry months.
Eastern Wetland Guardians
In eastern India, wetlands perform the vital task of filtering water, preventing floods and supporting fisheries. Odisha’s Chilika region and West Bengal’s East Kolkata Wetlands demonstrate how healthy aquatic ecosystems sustain both biodiversity and livelihoods. Community-led conservation has helped protect fish populations, migratory birds and local livelihoods that depend directly on clean water. “We measure success not by the tonnes of waste removed, but by the return of clean water, birds and the smiles of people who thought these lakes were gone forever,” Bhoomika Sachin EFI volunteer. Smaller ponds across villages are also being revived through desilting, waste removal and rainwater harvesting, ensuring water security for both agriculture and households.
Western Traditional Wisdom
Rajasthan has long mastered the art of surviving with little water. Traditional johads small earthen check dams have helped recharge groundwater for centuries. Their revival by local communities has transformed drought-prone villages by improving agriculture, increasing drinking water availability and reducing migration.
In Gujarat, historic stepwells and lakes are increasingly being restored not only as heritage structures but as functioning water systems that reconnect cities with sustainable water management practices. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has witnessed large-scale community participation in river clean-up drives, lake rejuvenation and watershed development, especially in regions repeatedly affected by drought.
More Than Just Water
Restoring a water body is never only about water. Healthy lakes recharge groundwater that supplies nearby homes. Wetlands reduce flooding by absorbing excess rainwater. Rivers support agriculture, fisheries and tourism. Trees growing around restored lakes lower temperatures and improve air quality. Wildlife responds quickly too. Dragonflies return first, followed by frogs, fish, turtles and birds. In many restored wetlands, birdwatchers have documented the return of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, kingfishers, herons and egrets after years of absence. Nature, it seems, has an extraordinary ability to heal if given the chance.
Community & Conservation
Environmental restoration is not limited to scientists or governments. Schoolchildren, software engineers, retirees, corporate employees and local residents regularly volunteer during restoration drives. These efforts build not just cleaner ecosystems but stronger communities. When people physically remove waste from a lake they once ignored, they develop a sense of ownership that lasts long after the clean-up ends. Environmentalists often describe restoration as changing people’s relationship with water rather than simply changing the landscape.
A Future Worth Restoring
Climate change is making India’s water crisis more complex. Intense rainfall causes floods, while longer dry spells create water scarcity. Healthy rivers, ponds, wetlands and lakes are among the country’s strongest natural defences against these extremes. Every revived river, lake, pond proves that ecological damage is not always permanent. Every restored wetland becomes a refuge for wildlife and communities. Because when water returns, it does far more than fill a lake. It restores livelihoods, revives biodiversity, strengthens climate resilience and reminds us that some of India’s oldest wisdom may also hold the key to its future.
